Visit by the Malta Table Tennis Association President to the Guangzhou No.1 High School.

On the occasion of the 49th World Table Tennis Championships held in Guangzhou China, the President Mr. Joe Borg Cardona visited Guangzhou No.1 High School. This meeting was held through the collaboration of The Malta China Friendship Society, who through their hard working President Mr. Reno Calleja were instrumental in providing the required contacts to our association.

Mr. Borg Cardona was taken round the High School by Mr. Yu Yongzheng & the Vice Chairman of the School Mr. Cheng Ke. The school has excellent sports facilities & students from various sports have won many Chinese honours. Mr. Borg Cardona said that an exchange program could be possible however it is probable that before the group of Chinese students come over to our island, a Chinese fact-finding team representing the school would come over to Malta to explore our country & organise better their visit.

Malta’s participation at the 49th Worlds’ Table Tennis Championships held in Guangzhou China was undoubtedly very positive considering that Simon Gerada was unavailable (injury) and Mario Genovese had to miss some matches in China also due to an injury he sustained in the match against Montenegro. Below are the full results of our team in which Malta finished 93rd place out of 104 countries.

The Team was composed of Edward Baldacchino, Mario Genovese, David Pace and Alex Anastasi. Head of delegation was the President of the MTTA Mr. Joe Borg Cardona who attended various meetings in Guangzhou including the AGM of the ITTF and the European T.T. Union Congress. Johanna Grech also accompanied the contingent as a full member of the Technical Committee within the International Tale Tennis Union and also attended the Women’s Forum who have approved to organise in Malta a Women’s Seminar to be held next September 2008. More Photos of the event are hereby attached.

Good Results In Three Categories

The five day Table Tennis Tour to Sicily for the second consecutive year proved to be successful and of benefit to the Maltese participants who opted to take part in joint training sessions at Pol Sporting Club Catania along with a tournament which was held on Saturday in three different categories. The younger Maltese players were under the guidance of Svetlana Tetouieva but they also had the opportunity to do multiple ball training due to the new robot which the club has just purchased, this proved to be a positive method of practice and also new to our young athletes. The results obtained were the following. In the boys under-15 Marcus Portelli placed second and Daniel Portelli placed third. In the girls under-15 Jessica Pace took first place and in the mixed open David Pace placed third. David said “Relations with Sicilian counterparts are strengthening and this augers well for future opportunities that we may want to endeavour”

He also gave a seminar to Maltese Coaches and enlightened them on the latest techniques of the game. The MTTA delegates took Mr. Kucharski to visit some schools and here practical and fun sessions were implemented to the delight of enthusiastic students. Mr. Kucharski visited the latest private Table Tennis Centre in Tarxien and shared his thoughts with the Coaches at the Centre encouraging them to keep up the good work.

At the end of his stay the MTTA was presented with a report by the top International Coach so as to work on areas which he felt needed to be addressed most in respect of young Table Tennis aspirants, without doubt the Malta Table Tennis Association will act up on the professional advise that has been put forward.
